Aachen, Germany

As you already know, Matt and I both suffer from severe wanderlust.  We're itching to take another big trip but it looks like it might be next year before that happens.  In the mean time, we just can't resist getting away on the weekends.  Even a few days someplace new is exciting and so worth the effort.

I'm not sure how Aachen happened.  I'd never heard of it before, to be honest.  But, when we sat down to look at Eurostar destinations, we settled on Germany and Aachen is the first place you come to when you head in that direction.  So Aachen was our destination.  We left after work on a Friday and were there within a few hours and settled into the center of the city.

We had a lovely weekend people watching from sidewalk cafes, visiting the Aachen Cathedral and the town hall (Rathaus).   Like Aix en Provence, Aachen is known for their fountains.  My favorite was the Fountain of Puppets with all of its movable parts.  Aachen is also famous for being the royal seat of Charlemagne, so a museum visit was on the agenda.  One location that was not on the agenda was the red light district.  However, we were casually strolling around the city center walking off dinner one night and after a right turn, then a left, then a right, that is exactly where we found ourselves.  It's just a few blocks from the Town Hall and apparently dates back to the middle ages.  We quickly retreated to some nearby streets without red lights and floor to ceiling windows.

Here are some of my favorite photos from the weekend.  Don't worry, none of them are from our short and accidental foray into the red light district.

It just had to be done.

You'll notice I took little big blogging break during the month of December.
It was a good month, in spite of a canceled trip and the flu.
We enjoyed London during the holidays and spent Christmas in Norway.
We got to experience plenty of snow. We then rang in the New Year with the dearest friends.

It was a good month. But, as usual I'm ready to take down the tree and get back into a routine.

What better way to jump back into blogging for the new year
than with a recap of the previous year via a fast moving Flipagram.
Don't blink or you might miss something!

We ended the year mumbling that we didn't travel nearly as much as we wanted in 2014.
But, that's just silly really.

2014 Travel
Dunkirk & Gravelines, France
Bruges & Ghent, Belgium
Bergen and Oslo, Norway

I did get 2 new countries on my 50 by 50 list which leaves
21 months to get 14 more if I'm to meet that goal.  We'll see.

The year included another move within London to Sloane Square and two new jobs.

Of course, the highlight of the year was a trip home to Texas to see my daughter
Jessica married.  If you follow me on Instagram, then you're already in on what will be the absolute highlight of 2015.

"First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes..."

Lots more to come on that note in the upcoming months you can be sure.

I still have several Venice posts and I have to finish up the road trip with my dad and brother.
I'm also eager to show you beautiful Norway.

In an effort to stave off the winter blues, we also already have a few trips
on the calendar for the next few months.

Thanks so much for sticking around even when I don't connect with you nearly as much as I want to!

Happy New Year!!
It's gonna be a great one.

What are you most looking forward to in 2015?
