Castle Hill of Nice

In a place as beautiful as Nice, you want to take in all of the best views.  The best views in Nice are from the lush park at the top of Castle Hill, Parc de la Colline du Chateau.  When Matt asked "stairs or elevator?" I don't have to tell you how I responded.

We found the free lift and waited in line for about 20 minutes with a group of rowdy, French teenagers and other tourists.  After a few seconds the doors opened and we headed up a little bit further.  That first glimpse over the edge certainly took my breath away.

There was once a Citadel sitting high above the Bay of Angels.  There isn't much left as it was later destroyed.  Now, it's a park area with a few snack bars, playgrounds and some ruins.  We didn't explore all of it but just admired the views and snapped hundreds of photographs.

I mentioned in my last post the glorious show that the Mediterranean Sea displays in the French Riviera.  It seems to me as as if the whole city is eagerly watching.  The buildings are stacked up the hills all facing the sea, theater seating for the nautical show.

I was clicking photographs but there were many moments when I put the camera down and just drank in the views.  The wind was blowing, couples were walking hand in hand, pups were pulling on their leashes and children were playing.  All against the backdrop of the dramatic sea, the beautiful city stacked up against the coastline and the lush park surrounding us.

As the sun started to move down towards the horizon we decided to head down.  This time we opted for a walk rather than the lift.  Going down is much easier than going up.  We followed the paths never certain if we were going the right way, just following our instinct and the slope of the land.

When you visit Nice, be sure to head up to the highest point for views that you'll never forget.

What would you do?  Walk or elevator?

  1. We're currently debating where to go in the South of France and we stumbled upon this blog upon doing so! Do you have any advice? We'll be going from Barcelona to Italy, so obviously we need to hit up a few cities in the South of France! :D

  2. You should definitely stop in Nice! :) And while you are there, make sure to stop by Monaco to see the original Monte Carlo Casino. It is beautiful there. As for the stops, I would recommend Carcassonne (town inside a castle), Nimes (mini-colosseum & Juliet's balcony) and I even recommend stopping by Pont du Gard. Safe travels!
